The space agency described the moon base as a sprawling city-like lunar outpost stretching over hundreds of square miles.

NASA is launching uncrewed missions to transport lunar rovers and build a moon base at the lunar south pole before astronauts return to stay.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman is laying out the ground work for building a new base on the moon. He says it will be done in phases, and infrastructure will be waiting for the astronauts who land there in 2028.

"This is when living and working on the Moon becomes a reality," NASA said about "humanity’s first lunar outpost."

The space agency outlined the first phase of its moon base plans on Tuesday, awarding hundreds of millions of dollars in contracts to four U.S. companies.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the agency will begin building a moon base with near-monthly robotic landings starting in 2027, with astronauts potentially living on the lunar surface for months at a time by the early 2030s.
